Issue 15 - The story of the elusive Dugongs of Bazaruto
This is a story of how a large sanguine, sea grass-eating mammal humbled and taught me about the inter-connectedness of life and the impact we human beings are having on our planet and each other. It is also a story of a dream of committed people; one that remains tantalisingly close but is a long way from being fulfilled. In short, it is a story that is incomplete and this is only the first chapter. As an underwater photographer, I have had my share of close encounters with large pelagics and mammals and been frustrated by small critters defying me macro shots. But I’ve always managed to get the photo. And photographing Dugongs of the Bazaruto Archipelago was, I thought, going to be a slam-dunk easy exercise.
